Future in the Cards

As the smell of cinnamon, cloves and orange peel wafted through the air from brewing tea, psychic Lori King laid out colorful tarot cards. The cards are laid out only after her client asks a burning question they would like answered. Not having any incendiary issues at the moment, I did what any self-respecting mother would do. I asked about job prospects for my eldest daughter set to graduate in less than two months.

After ruminating over and reading selected cards, Ms. King advised, “Your daughter does have good job prospects. The locations I see as most favorable are Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco.” Good thing since she is graduating with a bachelor’s degree in graphic design from Otis where she and our money have gone for the last four years.

At this point, I turned the conversation to the current economic climate and the impact it has had on business. It seems Ms. King is experiencing an uptick in business both on the phone and through the internet. “Six people called in this last week to ask me if the world was ending. I attribute a lot of the fear to misinformation floating around out there about Nostradamus and the Mayans saying civilization is coming to an end in 2012. Mayans never said this is the end of the world…that was an incorrect translation. What they meant was the time we are in is an end to how we’ve been doing things up to now.” Her advice is for people to explore fresh ideas and to find new approaches both in their personal and professional lives.

Ms. King is also a registered hypnotherapist and this year has twice as many people turning to her for help through hypnosis. Many requesting help are those who have recently lost jobs. “Hypnosis can sometimes help people to work beyond their fears so they can make good decisions for themselves. It can also help them find out what they really want to do, especially if they were stuck in the same job for 20 years.” One way she accomplishes this is to take people back to the age of seven or eight years old. This is the age when she feels a person’s mind is less inhibited and they are better able to listen to their inner guide, hopefully capturing long buried dreams, aspirations and perhaps a long lost talent or two.

Considering all this negative client baggage, one would think Ms. King might need hypnotherapy herself. Nope. She says she feels sad so many life altering events are happening to people, but she always maintains her objectivity and professionalism. “The minute you lose your objectivity, you lose the good reading your client is supposed to have. I also avoid liquor, drugs and I limit my caffeine. You can’t drink because it takes away clarity and the ability to focus correctly.” Good advice for anyone focusing on the future.
